Recently, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) published a report
on Indonesia's energy transition prospects.
Indonesia's energy transition will accelerate,
the report said.
Through the spread of renewable energy, Indonesia's energy system will be cleaner and more sustainable, meeting energy demand while further moving away from fossil fuels
.
IRENA expects Indonesia's population to reach 335 million by 2050 and demand for electricity to more than
five times what it is today.
The report recommends that Indonesia expand the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, bioenergy, geothermal energy and green hydrogen to meet growing energy demand
.
Currently, the share of renewable energy in Indonesia's energy mix is 14%.
By 2050, this proportion will increase to two-thirds
.
By then, the total investment demand for the entire energy system will reach $2.
42 trillion, and energy costs and external costs will be kept at a low level
.
According to IRENA, Indonesia's potential to harness abundant renewable energy resources is more cost-effective
than continuing to rely heavily on fossil fuels.
