DSM's new plant-based N-3 product was approved by the European Union
The European Commission has approved DSM's new plant-based omega-3 solution for consumption and use
throughout the EU as a fish and meat substitute.
Gilbert Verschelling, Director of Business Development and Innovation at Ingredients, DSM, said: "Derived from algae, this product delivers vegan eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (n-3 fatty acids) to a wide range of food and beverage applications, including meat, fish and dairy alternatives and baked goods
.
”
As a plant-based alternative to traditional fish oil, this n-3 solution can be used to improve the nutritional status of products without affecting marine ecosystems
.
The company says the product uses natural algae, which contain the same EPA and DHA
as traditional fish products.
It is understood that this algae was produced by strains of seaweed found in the marine environment decades ago, through seed cultivation, these algae are grown
through fermentation in a closed controlled system completely independent of the marine ecosystem.
DSM believes that algae-based N-3 solutions will be widely used
.
Compared to fish oil products, this product has a neutral taste and can be used to enhance other animal-based products
