India's thermal coal imports rose more than 15 percent in the first three months of 2018, with Indonesia accounting for around
60 percent of total supply, according to American Fuels & Natural Resources, a Dubai-based coal trader.
India's rising coal imports have led to an overall increase in demand in the region this year, pushing the price of benchmark coal freight in Australia to more than $100 a tonne, a price that has not been seen
in more than five years.
India's thermal coal imports rose to 39.
6 million mt in the three-month period ended March 31, data from American Fuels & Natural Resources.
This compares with 34.
4 million mt of thermal coal in the first three months of 2017.
However, the Indian government's coal data for the first three months of 2018 has not yet been released
.
American Fuels & Natural Resources is broadly in line with Reuters-assessed Indian trade data, which showed imports of 37 million mt
in the quarter.
India is likely to increase its thermal coal imports in 2018 after two consecutive years of declines due to domestic logistics
bottlenecks, regulatory changes and soaring electricity demand.
Senior trader Vasudev Pmunani said India's demand for high-calorific value coal, most of which needs to be imported, is increasing as buyers look to get more energy from the coal they buy to offset higher prices and logistical issues, mainly rail delays
.
South Africa was India's second-largest source of foreign coal in the first quarter, providing about a quarter of total imports, followed by the United States and Australia
, the data showed.
Adani Enterprises, India's largest coal trader, accounted for nearly a sixth of all imports, purchasing about 6.
51 million mt during the period.
Tata Group imported 5.
23 million mt of coal
in Singapore, Switzerland.
The companies did not respond to requests for
comment.
According to the data, the ports of Mundra, Krishnapatnam and Kandla account for two-fifths
of all imported goods.
