India's coal production is expected to grow by 6.
4%
from 777 million tonnes in 2020 to 827.
8 million tonnes in 2021, according to a new report from GlobalData.
Growth continued to expand
after growing by 3.
1% in 2020.
According to British analysts, the key to the increase in production is the entry of private companies into the industry
.
"GlobalData expects India's coal production to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9% to reach 1.
2 billion tonnes by 2025, meeting the Indian government's target
of 1 billion tonnes of domestic capacity.
However, Covid-19 will present some short-term challenges to this estimate," said
Vinneth Bajaj, mining analyst at GlobalData.
Since the beginning of March 2021, there has been a sharp increase in new Covid-19 cases and new lockdowns in major coal-producing states such as Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Telangana have hampered coal business
in India.
Nevertheless, Bajaj sees a slight pick-up in coal consumption in April 2021, suggesting a recovery
in demand in the coming months.
Despite the country's growing demand for electricity, coal is gradually reducing its power generation
due to environmental concerns.
Bajaj added, "In 2020, about 73% of India's electricity came from coal
.
However, India has an environmental commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030
.
As a result, the share of coal-fired power generation is expected to decline to 70.
6%, while the share of renewables will rise from 2.
9% in 2020 to 4.
2%
in 2025.
