Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio), an Indian telecom operations provider, said on Monday it was building a new submarine cable system that would run India eastward to Singapore and beyond, known as India-Asia-Xpress (IAX), while also westbound India to India and the Middle East and Europe, known as India-Europe-Xpress (IEX).
The telco is working with several major global partners and submarine cable supplier SubCom to execute the projects, designed to support an "extraordinary growth"
in data demand across the region.
Jio said submarine cable systems can be interconnected or connected to major exchange points and content hubs to expand services
globally.
"IAX and IEX will enhance consumer and business users
' access to content and cloud services inside and outside India.
"
These high-capacity and high-speed systems will offer more than 200Tbps of capacity across 16,000 kilometers and will employ open systems technology as well as wavelength-switched RoADM/branch units
.
"To meet the demands of streaming video, remote work, 5G, IoT, and more, Jio is taking on a leadership role in the construction of the first India-centric IAX and IEX submarine cable systems," said Mathew Oommen, President of Jio, "Implementing these key initiatives amid the impact of the global pandemic has been a challenge, but the ongoing pandemic has accelerated digital transformation and the need for high-performance global connectivity to deliver richer experiences
for businesses and consumers.
”
The IAX system connects India to the Asia-Pacific market with fast connections from Mumbai and Chennai to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, while the IEX system expands India's connectivity to Savona, Italy, and landings
elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa.
In addition, the two systems are connected to Reliance Jio's global fiber network in Asia Pacific and Europe, eventually to the east and west coasts
of the United States.
IAX is expected to be operational in mid-2023, while IEX will be operational
in early 2024.
