Indian Railways plans to develop 20 GW of solar projects on its vacant land to help meet consumer demand
of more than 33 billion units by 2030, the Ministry of Railways has announced.
At the meeting, Piyush Goyal, Minister of Union of Indian Railways, Commerce and Industry, discussed the goal of Indian Railways to achieve 100% self-sufficiency
in all electricity needs.
The meeting was also attended by the nation's leading solar developers to discuss innovative solutions for building solar projects along the railroad to achieve the 20 GW renewable energy target

Not long ago, Goyal tweeted that Indian Railways will achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, making it one of the first railways
in the world to go green.
Currently, Railway Energy Management Limited (REMCL) is tasked with building a 3 GW solar power project
on vacant land in Indian Railways.
REMCL is a joint venture
between Indian Railways and RITES.
REMCL has tendered for 2 GW of solar projects on unused railway land
.
In July, the company announced another tender to install 1 GW of solar projects
along the railway.
