To ensure that the rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity and planned tenders for large-scale solar and wind projects have sufficient transmission capacity to power demand centers across the country, India has announced extensive plans
to build transmission projects.
According to Reuters, the Indian government plans to tender 54 GW of transmission projects
by March 2020.
The value of these projects is about $5 billion
.
A senior official at India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said 16 GW of transmission projects
would be tendered by June.
By December 2018, India had completed tenders for 12 GW of transmission projects, while an additional 38 GW of transmission projects
will be tendered between July 2019 and March 2020.
It is understood that the bidding plan for transmission projects is customized according to the government's announced renewable energy project bidding plan, and the government will complete the bidding of all solar and wind power projects by the end of March 2020, so as to achieve the target
of 100 GW and 60 GW of solar and wind power installations by the end of March 2022.
In order to achieve the above renewable energy generation targets, India needs to increase the construction of transmission and distribution infrastructure to absorb renewable energy integration on this scale
.
Therefore, the Indian government plans to expand the bidding
of transmission projects.
