The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and MEC Intelligence (MEC+) have jointly released the Indian Wind Energy Market Outlook 2025, which predicts that the world's fourth-largest wind power market will add nearly 20.
2 GW of wind capacity
between 2021 and 2025.
The additional capacity will add 50% to India's existing 39.
2 GW wind market, paving the way
for growth after slowing in recent years.
GWEC and MEC+ had predicted that 2020 would be a breakthrough year for wind power in India, supported by large pipelines and multiple policy interventions to alleviate bottlenecks
.
However, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has been much
more severe than expected.
In fact, instead of reaching the projected 3.
3 GW of new wind power capacity in 2020, India managed to install 1.
1 GW, with the remaining capacity pushed to 2021 or abandoned by developers
.
Between 2021 and 2025, the market will rebound with nearly 20.
2 GW of installed wind capacity, especially wind-solar-solar hybrid projects
.
As a result, policymakers have begun experimenting with hybrid projects in various forms to explore the viability of
large-scale wind and solar projects.
Currently, India has 10.
3 GW of pipeline in central and state tenders, which is expected to drive installation
by 2023.
The post-2023 market is expected to be driven by new capacity for wind projects of around 10 GW, mainly through hybrid projects, which are becoming increasingly important
for the country's round-the-clock uninterrupted power supply plans.
