The Netherlands and German grid operator TenneT have announced that 28 billion euros will be spent on the low-carbon energy transition
in Germany and the Netherlands over the next decade.
The company says work to develop a grid that can accommodate growing renewable energy sources is more
important than ever.
Last year, Tent invested 1.
77 billion euros in the power grid, including 736 million euros in the Netherlands and 1.
03 billion euros
in Germany.
According to the plan, Dutch investment will focus on grid expansion and upgrading of existing infrastructure, with major projects including offshore power grids, Doetinchem, the Dutch-German interconnected grid, and the COBRAcable submarine cable system between the Netherlands and Denmark.
Tent is developing an offshore system to connect 3.
5GW of offshore wind farms off the Dutch coast
.
Capacity in the Dutch North Sea is expected to increase by around 7 GW between 2023 and 2030, and the Dutch government is currently developing a roadmap
for offshore wind.
As mentioned earlier, the artificial islands between the Netherlands and the UK are expected to help house future offshore wind farms
.
Regarding planned investments in Germany, Tent highlighted the construction of direct current (DC) power lines, including SuedLink and SuedOstLink, among others
.
Tent said that in the German North Sea, the offshore grid connection now provides more than 5GW of transmission capacity, enough for existing wind farms
.
By 2019, Tenter's connection capacity will reach more than 7 GW and is expected to reach more than
10 GW by 2025.
Tent CEO Mel Kroon said the company is preparing for its "future based on a fully sustainable energy landscape", which requires a more flexible system with sufficient hydrogen storage energy and battery storage capacity, and "consumer" involvement is also important
.
"The balancing role of traditional power plants will be partially replaced
by consumers of electric vehicles, solar panels or home batteries," Kroon said.
Overall, they can provide the flexibility needed while making money
in the process.
”
In 2017, Tenter's underlying income increased to EUR 3.
95 billion
from EUR 3.
23 billion in 2016.
EBIT (excluding special items) increased from €701 million to €742 million
.
