Global wind capacity auctioned in the first quarter of 2021 was close to 7 GW, a clear recovery from the same period last year, when the first wave of the pandemic resulted in auctions of only 2.
7 GW,
according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
In the first quarter, offshore wind accounted for 3.
9 GW of the total, mainly New York's second offshore wind project tender (delayed from July 2020), which awarded 2.
5 GW, and five projects in China received 1.
4 GW of electricity
.
On land, India received 1.
2 GW
through its Tranche-X Wind ISTS auction at Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
GWEC noted that the auction was oversubscribed for the first time since February 2019 and resulted in a record low winning bid
at the SECI auction.
In addition, Europe auctioned nearly 2 GW of onshore wind capacity
through tenders in Spain (998 MW), France (519.
7 MW) and Italy (259 MW).
GWEC said that during this period, China awarded only 93 MW of onshore wind, but also announced an onshore wind auction based on the parity feed-in tariff, totaling nearly 6 GW
.
Germany and Italy also announced new onshore wind auction capacity – 1,500 MW and 700 MW, respectively
.
Meanwhile, Poland accounted for the entire capacity of the 4.
3 GW of offshore wind auction capacity
announced this quarter.
"It's safe to say that the market is on a recovery path, with more than 14 GW of new wind auction capacity
announced this year," said GWEC.
”
However, "the IEA's net-zero roadmap for 2050 released last week shows that we are nowhere near the level
of new wind capacity needed to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century.
" ”
The roadmap calls for adding at least 390 GW of wind power
annually over the next decade.
