Global research and consulting firm Gartner said in a new report that global semiconductor revenue totaled $466.
2 billion in 2020, up 10.
4%
from 2019.
"Memory, GPU and 5G chipsets led the growth of semiconductors driven by demand in the hyperscale, PC, hypermobile, and 5G mobile device markets, while automotive and industrial electronics suffered due to reduced or suspended spending on Covid-19," explained Andrew Norwood
, research vice president at Gartner.
Intel maintained its position as the world's number one semiconductor supplier in 2020 revenue, followed by Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and Micron
.
Intel's semiconductor revenue grew 7.
4 percent, helped by growth in its core client and server CPU businesses
.
Overall, the best performers in the top 10 are NVIDIA and MediaTek
.
Huida achieved 45.
2% growth, primarily driven by the company's
gaming-related and data center businesses.
Driven by Huawei's business disruptions throughout the year, MediaTek's revenue grew 38.
1%
in 2020.
Memory accounted for 26.
7% of semiconductor sales in 2020 and was the second-best performing device category, with revenue up 13.
5%.
"Memory benefited from the key trend of 2020, namely the shift to home work and study, driving increased server builds by hyperscale vendors to meet the demands of online work and play, as well as the proliferation
of PCs and hyper-mobile devices," Norwood said.
”
In memory, NAND flash performed best due to supply shortages in the first half of 2020, with revenue up 25.
2%.
"In 2021, revenue will skyrocket by around
25 percent, despite price increases and shortages of NAND flash and DRAM.
This makes memory-focused Samsung likely to regain the top spot
in the semiconductor market from Intel in 2021.
