According to the latest data from the Rocky Mountain Institute's (RMI) Center for Commercial Renewable Energy, U.
S.
companies have purchased 2.
8 GW of solar power in 2018, as part of
the 6.
4 GW of off-site renewable energy contracts signed in the U.
S.
this year.
Not only is this far more than any other year, but according to RMI, companies purchased 1 GW more solar in 2018 than all other years combined
.
This is part of an
overall boom in renewable energy procurement.
U.
S.
social media giant Facebook signed 22 renewable energy deals, including deals to supply about 1 gigawatt of large-scale solar power plants for data centers in Alabama, Georgia, New Mexico, Oregon and Utah, and this year it was the largest company
in renewable energy procurement.
That's an explosive increase from last year's signing of two such contracts by Facebook, and comes under increasing scrutiny
for Facebook's role in spreading false and misleading news ahead of the 2015 election.
While Facebook's 1.
85 GW deal far outperforms any competitor, AT&T's 820 MW renewable energy purchases are also a huge amount, especially noting that this is the company's first year of market participation
.
It is followed by Walmart, one of the largest adopters of on-site solar energy, which signed an agreement earlier this year to install 23 megawatts of solar cells
at 21 plants in Illinois.
Microsoft and Apple are in 4th and 5th place, which should come as no surprise
given that tech companies have been major adopters of renewable energy.
However, Google ranks much lower on the list this year, likely because it has already offset all of its electricity
usage with renewable energy purchases.
