Thanks to a surge in solar panel installations and coal plant closures, renewable energy became Germany's largest source
of electricity for the first time in 2018.
According to the Fraunhofer Institute, wind, solar, hydro and biomass generated more than 40 percent of Germany's electricity in 2018, surpassing coal's share of 39 percent
.
Among them, solar capacity has increased by nearly 20%, and the closure of old coal plants and favorable weather conditions have combined to help green power generation resources lead coal power
.
The German government is also closely watching the balance of power generation, and despite billions of euros invested in renewable energy in recent years, the year-end greenhouse gas reduction target has not been met
.
As Europe's largest economy phases out nuclear and coal, green electricity will account for a larger share
in the future.
At present, Germany has set up a committee to develop a phase-out plan
for the world's largest power plant fuel.
It will report its findings
next month.
