Recently, Huntsman said in an earnings conference call that it does not expect to significantly expand methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) production capacity this year or 2021, and that current economic conditions cannot support additional capacity in the industry
.
Huntsman said demand for MDI had fallen significantly due to the coronavirus crisis, although consumption levels improved at the end of the second quarter
.
Huntsman expects demand to continue recovering in the third quarter from the lows seen at the start of the second quarter, although third-quarter sales of MDI and polyurethane systems are still expected to decline 7% year over year
.
Chief executive Peter Huntsman said: "We may gradually increase capacity over the next few years, but are not planning any major expansions at this time
.
Huntsman is developing a new MDI splitter for use at its MDI plant in Geismar, Louisiana
.
The separator will not increase the production capacity of the plant, but it will allow Huntsman to supply more different grades of MDI to the market
