Carrier gas, as a gas used in gas chromatography, which requires good chemical stability, high purity, inexpensive and easy to obtain, can be used for the detectors, there is used the carrier gas nitrogen , hydrogen , helium , argon and the like

When choosing which gas to use as a carrier gas, we must first consider which detector to use

The three main types of gas pollution are oxygen, moisture and hydrocarbon impurities

The presence of water in the carrier gas can cause hydrolysis of part of the stationary phase or silanized support, and even damage the column

The presence of organic compounds or hydrocarbon impurities in the gas can cause negative peaks, ghost peaks, increased background noise and tailing, pollution of the detector, and reduced sensitivity of the detector

The particulate impurities entrained in the gas may make the gas circuit control system malfunction

How to ensure the purity of the carrier gas: The purity of the carrier gas is very important for extending the life of the chromatographic column, reducing the noise background interference and maintaining the integrity of the peak shape

In order to prevent the gas cylinder from falling, it should be tied up with a chain or safety rope and stored against the wall

In order to avoid the interference of the gas flow rate, it is recommended to install a regulating valve between the gas cylinder and the spare gas cylinder, especially for the carrier gas, it is very important to install the regulating valve

When replacing gas cylinders and installing pressure relief valves, keep them as far away as possible

The newly installed gas cylinder pressure reducing valve, especially within the first 24 hours of its use, should be fully opened in order to prevent the pressure inside the pressure reducing valve from decreasing and causing pressure instability
