Newcycling®, developed by APK AG in Merseburg, Germany, is an innovative solvent-based plastic recycling process for high-quality recycling of packaging waste
.
With this innovative solvent-based Newcycling® recycling process, coupled with the excellent devolatilization performance of the ZSK twin-screw extruder and the gentle processing of the material, the quality of the recycled material can be close to that of virgin material

Plastic waste is both a challenge and an opportunity
Plastic waste is both a challenge and an opportunityThe amount of plastic waste generated daily is one of the most serious problems facing modern society
.
The necessity of a circular plastics economy is becoming more and more prominent today.
APK has made the pursuit of better sustainability and higher recycling rates in the plastics industry the company's main goal, and its innovative Newcycling® process has laid an important cornerstone for this goal
.
The necessity of a circular plastics economy is becoming more and more prominent today.
This innovative physical solvent-based process can extract and separate PA and PE from the PA/PE multi-layer composite film and obtain PA and PE regenerated particles with properties close to virgin materials.
Newcycling® - an economical and environmentally friendly process for recycling plastics
At APK's Newcycling® plant in Merseburg, the PA/PE multi-layer composite films are mechanically pretreated, ie shredded and sorted
.
The undissolved PA enters the Coperion ZSK twin-screw extruder, and after several process steps are fully mixed and devolatilized, it is processed into a high-quality PA melt, which is finally made into first-class PA recycled pellets
.
After the initial evaporation is completed, PE and the remaining solvent also enter the ZSK twin-screw extruder.
Although the ratio of PE and solvent will fluctuate to a certain extent, after the extruder is continuously devolatilized, it can also be finally produced.
A product of good quality
.
After the solvent is completely evaporated and collected, it can be reused in the Newcycling® process to form a closed loop
.
After complete devolatilization, the PE becomes a homogeneous, high-quality melt, which is then pelletized
.
The quality of PE recovered in this way is close to that of virgin material

Image: APK, Merseburg, GermanyPE recycled pellets produced by APK's Newcycling® technology are currently sold under the brand Mersalen® and PA recycled pellets are sold under the brand Mersamid®, both of which are recognized for their high quality and significant reduction in carbon emissions.
It has been highly appraised and recognized by the market
.
The Newcycling® process produces recycled plastic with an average 66% lower carbon footprint than producing the same plastic feedstock
.
Referring to the market potential of Newcycling® recycling, APK CEO Klaus Wohnig explained: "The purity of our recycled products is very high, confirmed by numerous expert reports
.
Mersalen®, for example, is suitable for numerous applications such as cosmetic packaging
.
Jochen Burger, process engineer at Coperion, said: "With APK's innovative Newcycling® process, we see the plastics industry take a very important step on the road to a circular economy
.
High-quality recycled material is produced thanks to APK and Coperion's technical prowess and comprehensive process expertise
.
At the same time, using this process does not need to invest a lot of cost in the production of new materials, saving energy consumption and resources
.
In doing so, we are benefiting the environment and future generations
.
Coperion is proud to support this innovative process of APK
.
"
The Coperion ZSK twin-screw extruder is ideally suited for APK's Newcycling® plastic recycling process due to its excellent mixing and devolatilization
