Clean energy agency Mercom India Research has released the latest Indian Solar Market Ranking 1H 2020, which shows the major market leaders
in the Indian solar industry from the first half of 2020 (January-June).
The report also includes a market share and shipment ranking
of key players in India's solar supply chain in the first half of 2020.
In the first half of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the Indian solar market, resulting in an overall slowdown
in solar installation activity.
During the period, total solar installations in India totalled 1.
3 GW, down 60%
compared to 3.
2 GW of installed capacity in January 2019.
The slowdown in activity across the industry has led to a reshuffle in the solar market rankings
.
Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group, said, "This is unlike
any year in the history of the Indian solar industry.
Despite historically low installs, the market has also created opportunities
for new leaders and innovators.
”
Large scale solar
In the first half of 2020, utility-scale solar installations installed 1,016 MW, accounting for 78%
of the new capacity.
Solar accounted for 56%
of the country's new electricity capacity in the first half of the year.
The report also shows that the top ten utility-scale (operational) project developers accounted for 94% of the market share
in the first half of 2020.
HeroFuture Energies led the installation of utility-scale projects in the first half of 2020 due to the commissioning of its 300 MW project in the first half of the year at the Bhadla Solar Park
.
In terms of cumulative installed capacity, Adani remained the largest utility-scale developer
as of June 2020.
The company also has the largest pipeline
of projects.
Currently, 10 utility-scale solar developers in India are developing projects in excess of 1 GW, according to Mercom data
.
Solar inverter supplier
In the first half of 2020, Sungrow was the largest supplier of solar central inverters, while Huawei was the largest supplier of string inverters in India
.
As of June 2020, FIMER India cumulatively is the largest supplier
of solar inverters.
However, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is also streamlining the technical specifications for solar grid-connected inverters, and existing policies may be adjusted, affecting foreign solar inverter suppliers and even all foreign solar equipment providers
.
Solar module supplier
In the first half of 2020, the top 10 module suppliers in India accounted for more than
74% of the market share.
LONGi Leye PV was India's largest module supplier in the first half of 2020, while Trina Solar was the leading module supplier
in cumulative shipments.
However, module suppliers are waiting for further clarification of the government's proposed Basic Tariff (BCD).
The government has not announced the amount of the tariff and its duration
.
Meanwhile, from July 30, 2020 to January 29, 2021, the safeguard duty (SGD) on solar cells and modules imported from China, Thailand and Vietnam has been 14.
90%, and from January 30 to July 29, 2021, the protection duty has been 14.
50%.
Both BCD and SGD are expected to restrict imports and give domestic manufacturers an advantage
over cheaper modules.
Installation structure
Mahindra Susten led the supply of module mounting structures in the first half of 2020, followed by Ganges Internationale and Strolar
.
As of June 2020, Ganges International is also a leading supplier
in terms of cumulative size.
In June, the Ministry of Finance imposed anti-dumping duties on aluminum and zinc-coated flat panel products used to install structures in China, Vietnam and South Korea to protect the domestic industry
.
The tax is effective from October 15, 2019 and is valid for five years
.
Rooftop solar
In the first half of 2020, the top 10 rooftop solar installers in the Indian market accounted for about 70% of
the total market.
However, due to the impact of the epidemic, the rooftop solar market plummeted by 50%
compared to the same period last year.
The C&I segment is expected to pick up in the second half of the year, especially in sectors
such as transportation, IT, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals and textiles.
Tata Solar Power was the largest rooftop solar project installed in the Indian market in the first half of the year and the largest cumulative rooftop solar service provider
in the first half of the year.
