Greece is preparing a number of clean energy projects for solar and wind power generation, with a cumulative installed capacity of 2.
6 GW, to attract investment and strengthen the Mediterranean country's renewable energy footprint
, the energy minister said a few days ago.
Greek Energy Minister Stathakis said: "From now on, renewable energy production and prices will be determined
by a competitive tender process.
The move is expected to encourage investment in renewable energy to reach €2.
5 billion to €3 billion, especially wind
.
”
According to the government announcement, Greece's first round of renewable energy tenders will be held on July 2, including 300 MW of wind power and 300 MW of solar power
.
Industry insiders said that many participants in the wind energy market have shown strong interest, including many foreign investors, especially private equity funds
.
Greece is known for its sunshine, the main driver of tourism, but it also has good wind resources
.
Like all EU member states, it has a legally binding clean energy target, with plans to reach 18%
renewable energy by 2020.
According to the plan, Greece will invest 300 MW of wind power and 300 MW of solar power every year from 2018 to 2020, and two 400 MW tenders will be held, bringing the total installed capacity to 2.
6 GW, equivalent to two nuclear reactors
.
The government said the first round of tenders in July will be open
for wind power projects of 3 to 50 MW and two categories of solar projects under 1 MW and 1 to 20 MW.
The EIB and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are active in the Greek market and are likely to lend to developers
of these projects.
Last year, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development pledged €300 million to finance clean energy
in Mediterranean countries.
