The Project Skybender team is using two unmanned aerial vehicles for testing, a Centaur that can fly at will, and a solar-powered drone Solara 50
built by Google Titan.
Google has received permission from the FCC to continue testing drone network systems in New Mexico until July

Of course, don't be too optimistic, after all, the difficulties faced by Google should not be
underestimated.
Google's other high-altitude network project, Project Loon, has been running for nearly 3 years and has not made much progress, and there was even a drone crash during an experiment last May

Project Loon is targeting WiFi, while Project Skybender is targeting 5G and is based on millimeter wave technology

Millimeter-wave technology was previously used for military research, and DARPA began using the technology on network connections in 2012 to remotely control
military bases.
Google has also considered a number of potential ways to solve the problem that millimeter waves can only be transmitted over short distances, including the use of phased array antennas, which are arrays of antennas

When the relative phase of the signal sent to each antenna is properly adjusted, the strength of the signal in the specified direction is finally enhanced and the intensity
in the other directions is suppressed.
The technology was originally used in radio astronomy, and later in military active radar and some AM radio stations

But phased array technology is complex and energy-intensive, and it's not yet known whether Google can put
it into practice.
