The submarine cable that will appear in the Maroochydore Sea will provide Australia's fastest internet connection to Asia, which is also the second fastest cable system
to connect the United States.
Australian National Development Minister Cameron Dick and Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson announced Friday that technology giants Google, RTI Connectivity and AARNet will build a 550-kilometre undersea fibre optic cable to connect to the Sunshine Coast
by 2020.
Cr Jamieson said the Sunshine Coast had pushed the project forward for four years
as data traffic from Australia grew by 40 per cent a year.
"This supposedly game-changing cable will change the Sunshine Coast and open up huge opportunities
for Queensland.
"
According to reports, the submarine cable system will connect Queensland, Japan, Guam and southern Australia, and from Guam to the SEA-US international submarine cable
system from Southeast Asia to the United States.
Mr Cameron Dick said: "This move is significant for Queensland as all Australian submarine telecommunications cables currently go to Sydney and Perth
.
Only a small amount of international telecommunications is now provided via satellite, and 95 to 99 per cent of Australia's internet demand is served by a limited number of submarine cables entering Sydney and Perth
.
”
According to reports, Australia has four submarine cables from Japan, the United States and New Zealand into Sydney, and another submarine cable from Asia into Perth
.
Cameron Dick said, "This is the risk and limitation
of Australian internet connectivity and its commercial data centre capacity.
”
RTI-C chief executive Russ Matulich said Queensland businesses only needed faster internet access
.
"The Sunshine Coast is located in a great location as it offers physical diversity
.
The new route will move in and out of Australia faster than Sydney as it is geographically closer to the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong regions, as well as the west coast
of the United States.
”
According to Reuters in August 2018, Australia's average internet speed is 11.
1 megabits per second, ranking 50th
in the world.
The new submarine cable project could add $927 million to the state's economy and create 864 jobs
on the Sunshine Coast.
