According to the Silver Institute's 2018 Global Silver Survey, global silver industry demand grew by about 4%, from 5.
    768 billion ounces in 2016 to 5.
    99 billion ounces
    last year.

Global PV industry silver demand grew by 19% in 2017

The survey shows that the increase in demand last year was mainly due to the record growth
    of the photovoltaic industry.
Demand for silver paste used to make solar cells increased from 79.
    3 million ounces in 2016 to 94.
1 million ounces in 2017, an increase of approximately 19%
    year-over-year.

In comparison, in 2014 and 2015, the PV industry's demand for silver reached 51.
    8 million ounces and 59.
    2 million ounces
    , respectively.

"China is once again a major source of growth, accounting for more than half of global solar panel installations last year, while Europe and India also saw continued growth
    ," the authors wrote.

The survey also pointed out that silver powder used in the photovoltaic industry is now increasingly commoditized, which has a negative impact
    on producers' profit margins.
The amount of silver used by the industry is still on the rise, but a large part of it is due to increased
    installations.

As for China's photovoltaic industry, the survey shows that domestic production accounted for 20% of the demand for silver paste on the front side last year, fully meeting the demand for
    silver paste on the back.
"As the quality continues to improve, we believe that the market share of domestic positive silver paste will continue to increase
    this year.
    " The survey states
    .

The survey further revealed that Indian PV cell manufacturers imported 15 tonnes of silver paste last year because silver used in the solar industry did not exist in the country
    .

Overall, the survey found that about 76% of silver demand in the PV industry last year was spent on front coatings, and the remaining 24% on back coatings
    .
In 2016, these percentages were 81% and 19%,
    respectively.

In 2017, the production-weighted average silver content per cell remained flat at approximately 0.
    13 grams
    .
In the long run, improving efficiency will reduce the amount of silver used to produce 1 watt of electricity, but it will not have a significant impact
in the short term due to the strong growth in demand for solar energy and the time required to adopt this new technology in commercial use.
