German battery manufacturer Sonnen will set up a battery factory in South Australia to capitalize on it as the world's fastest-growing solar rooftop storage market
.
The Australian managing director said the plant would be completed
in six to nine months.
Once built, about 10,000 solar cells
could be manufactured annually for the first five years.
He added: "We believe Australia will be the largest storage market in the next five years, Germany is the largest market at the moment, but we think Australia has the conditions
.
" “
Sonnen will import batteries that are not produced in Australia and rely on local supplies for the rest
.
The company did not disclose the specific amount of money
it would put into its South Australian investments.
Sonnen will also be the second battery maker to set up a "virtual power plant" in South Australia, where statewide blackouts rippled across the globe last summer, forcing mining giant BHP Billiton and aluminium producer Alcoa to suspend production
.
The battery cells installed by Sonnen will be connected together to act as power banks, absorbing power when there is a surplus and releasing it to the grid
when there is a power shortage.
South Australian Labor has previously hired entrepreneur Elon Musk to build the world's largest lithium-ion battery, which went into operation on Dec.
1 in time to power
the start of summer this year.
