Germany and Canada reached an agreement on Tuesday to explore joint development
of green hydrogen exports from Canadian hydroelectric projects to Germany.
Germany wants to expand hydrogen content to replace fossil fuels and achieve large-scale industrial and energy applications to meet climate goals, but Germany lacks the land resources to produce enough green energy for the necessary electrolysis process
.
Green hydrogen is a zero-carbon fuel produced by electrolysis that uses renewable energy from wind and solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen
.
Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, Seamus O'Regan, said: "Canada benefits from natural resources and urgently needs to reduce emissions
.
”
German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier believes that the two countries share the same goal
in achieving climate neutrality.
However, the two sides did not release details
of the likely volume of hydrogen trade.
The two Vice-Ministers will meet for the first time in May to set a timetable
for this work.
Canada launched its hydrogen strategy in December, calling on investors to spur growth in the sector, which the government says could be worth $40 billion and create 350,000 jobs
.
Canada wants to be one of the top three hydrogen producers in the world and plans to spend a large share on exports
.
The European Commission last July laid out a vision to roll out green hydrogen energy by 2050, which is expected to attract 470 billion euros in investment
.
On Thursday, Germany also agreed to work more closely with Saudi Arabia on green hydrogen
