The French government is sticking to its previously announced goal of shutting down France's remaining coal plants, as a report by grid operator RTE on Wednesday confirmed that coal-fired power generation
can be used in some cases.
In January, the government asked power system operators to conduct an additional analysis
of France's electricity security situation in the absence of coal-fired power plants.
The French government plans to halt the remaining coal plants, with a combined capacity of about 3,000 megawatts, operated by state-controlled utility EDF and Germany's Uniper as part of
its efforts to curb carbon emissions.
Speaking at a press conference, Ecology Minister Francois de Rugy said: "Given recent factors related to the security of supply provided by RTE, we can confirm the deadline for 2022
.
”
However, he added, "It's not an easy process
.
" RTE said in the report that given the possibility that France will close all coal plants by 2022, but the process should be gradual, the closure of coal plants may begin
in 2022.
However, the French government insisted on shutting down the remaining coal-fired power plants
by the end of 2022.
Reuters said that if this is to be achieved and a stable supply of electricity is to be ensured by then, France's new EPR nuclear reactor and a new gas-fired power plant must be put into operation, while the submarine interconnection system connecting Britain and France must also be put into operation as planned to obtain sufficient alternative power supply
.
RTE warned that security of
supply cannot be guaranteed in 2022 if EPR and gas-fired power plant operations are extended.
In this case, the operation of the coal power plant can be extended, but its production time should be limited, mainly in winter
