Exxon Mobil Corp said on Thursday it has begun design studies for its carbon capture storage (CCS) center in southeastern Australia, Reuters reported on April 15.
The US energy giant said the CCS centre would use existing infrastructure to store carbon dioxide at the depleted Bream field off the coast of Gippsland, Victoria
CCS captures and buries the carbon emitted, but it has not yet reached the commercialization stage
Exxon said it was in talks with local emissions-intensive industries that might be interested in using the center to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their operations

ExxonMobil said the Australian project's carbon capture infrastructure would have the capacity to store up to 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and would be operational by 2025 if technical and commercial viability was confirmed
