Global energy giant ExxonMobil is reportedly in talks with an Indian company to kick-start cooperation in the clean energy sector
.
The US-based company appears to be drawn to India's clean energy policies and has increased interaction
between Indian and U.
S.
businesses over the past few years.
Indian business daily Mint recently reported that ExxonMobil may form a partnership
with GAIL, a government-owned company in India.
However, the news media did not mention what type of partnership
this could be.
GAIL, formerly Gas Authority of India Limited, is India's largest natural gas processing and distribution company
.
The company is involved in the transmission and supply
of natural gas to power plants, industries as well as small consumers in several cities in India.
The company also supplies natural gas
to the transportation sector across the country.
In addition to its core business of natural gas transmission and distribution, GAIL also has renewable energy assets, mainly wind energy
.
According to its sustainability report for fiscal year 2017-18, GAIL's renewable energy operating capacity is 128 MW, including 118 MW of wind energy
.
GAIL recently offered to acquire 874 MW of wind energy assets from a subsidiary of the financially troubled IL&FS Group, which GAIL has offered for about $680 million to acquire
.
Although GAIL has yet to announce any large-scale and long-term plans to increase solar and wind capacity, it did sign a memorandum of understanding with another public sector company, BHEL, to develop solar power projects
.
GAIL will be the project developer, while BHEL will act as the EPC service provider
