ExxonMobil has signed a memorandum of understanding to participate in the recently announced Acorn Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in Scotland
.
The project plans to capture and store around 5-6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year by 2030 from the gas terminal at the St Fergus complex in Peterhead, Scotland, which includes ExxonMobil's joint venture gas terminal
.
The Acorn project has the potential to provide more than half of the 10 million tonnes of CO2 sequestered per year set by the UK government and, if scaled up, has the potential to sequester more than 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year by the mid-2030s.
"ExxonMobil has more than 30 years of experience in CCS technology and is advancing several new CCS opportunity programs around the world," said Joe Blommaert, president of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions

ExxonMobil also said it had joined NECCUS, a coalition of industry, government and academic experts working to reduce carbon emissions from industrial facilities in Scotland

ExxonMobil's membership will help the alliance leverage the company's extensive global experience in carbon capture and storage to explore the potential for technology-driven solutions to reduce emissions
.
NECCUS members include the Scottish Government, four leading Scottish universities and a number of industry partners
.
