Exxon Mobil Corp said recently it has begun design studies for its carbon capture storage (CCS) center in southeastern Australia, similar to its project in Houston, Texas, to reduce Industrial emissions in the Gippsland Basin
.
The US energy giant said the CCS centre would use existing infrastructure to store carbon dioxide at the depleted Bream field off the coast of Gippsland, Victoria
.
CCS can capture emissions and bury them underground, but it has not yet reached the commercialization stage
.
ExxonMobil said it is in talks with local emissions-intensive industries that may be interested in using the center to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their operations
.
The largest U.
S.
oil producer also plans to build a hydrogen plant and a CCS project at its Baytown refinery near Houston, Texas, to reduce its carbon footprint while being profitable
.
ExxonMobil said the Australian project's carbon capture infrastructure would have the capacity to store up to 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and would be operational by 2025 if technical and commercial viability was confirmed
