Amcor, the world's leading packaging company, recently received a printing project to reshape a major potato chip brand
.
Amcor, the world's leading packaging company, recently received a printing project to reshape a major potato chip brand
.
Rebranding is a very tricky business for packaging and printing manufacturers
.
As a KODAK-Merilron FLEXCEL NX plate user, Amcor is helping this major potato chip brand come back to market with a new logo and product images, and different packaging for different flavors
.
"This project has an extreme color gamut," he said.
"Bright yellow, magenta, dark blue, green, it's going to use every color you can imagine
.
Traditional ECG Extended Color Gamut provides printers with a selectable set of standardized inks, generally considered to be the standard 7-color ink set, including CMYK, orange, green, and violet
.
Amcor currently has 24 machines using KODAK FLEXCEL NX plates supplied by prepress specialist Kirk Group of Companies
.
At Amcor's Moorabbin facility, McQuiggan raved about the print, installation and ink teams, as well as the versatile Kodak flexo plates they used
.
McQuiggan further explained how flexo can drastically reduce costs through faster setups and printing speeds
.
It is in no way inferior to gravure, but in some countries the latter is much more expensive
.
With the extended color gamut, he can now do the same job at "market leading cost" with 4-5 color flexo
.
“All companies face price and cost pressures,” McQuiggan believes, “but I think the key issue is, for a company like Amcor, being able to set up a machine, use one ink system on one machine, It has been incredible for us to do the printing and printing in the same order
.
”
And what does this mean for customers? They can therefore use their budget elsewhere
.
Funds previously spent on reproduction, proofing and tools can now be used to expand important promotional activities
.
“Compared to gravure, which was a seven-figure budget in three or four months
.
Now 12 months later, the marketing team hasn’t even spent that budget,” McQuiggan said.
Great
.
"
But cost-effectiveness isn't its only advantage
.
If the quality of the final product is not up to the mark, any cost savings will not be worth mentioning
.
Looking back at the example of this potato chip brand, using four-color extended color gamut printing can provide customers with a satisfactory product; high quality brings repeat business, and more colors will not be beneficial for all included SKUs (stocks).
unit of measure) has a negative impact on the brand as a whole
.
“Consistency is key, especially when changing brand colors in the process,” McQuiggan added.
“In this project, branding was important
.
My job was to convince the end user that we could provide them in the process.
The desired brand color
.
"
With CMYK ECG extended color gamut, McQuiggan can use one plate to print product images and special brand colors without sacrificing brand image
.
The logo is located in the very center of the package, and the company name is decorated in white and highlighted on a red background
.
It uses reflective blue as a whole and exudes a warm yellow luster
.
None of this is easily achieved
.
McQuiggan recalls, “I tried my best with traditional plates and couldn’t satisfy my customers
.
But with Kodak-Miraclon plates and the CMYK ECG four-color extended color gamut method, I got even better.
color density and color gamut range, which is the most important thing
.
”
Are brand owners happy with that too? “Number one was the logo,” says McQuiggan, “then the product images, then the background
.
They were happy with all three
.
”
