Evonik's carbon fiber reinforced PA12 has been certified by DNV GL for the manufacture of thermoplastic composite pipes for the oil and gas industry!
After years of unremitting efforts, TCP industry pioneers finally succeeded in February 2020, announcing the first carbon fiber reinforced material that fully complies with the TCP industry certification DNV GL ST-F119 standard
Evonik has completed a multi-year comprehensive development and certification project of VESTAPE® carbon fiber PA12 composite unidirectional tapes, which have been proven to handle sour crude oil at high temperatures up to 80°C
As a first-of-its-kind project, this project not only demonstrates the reliability of the DNV GL certification standard, but also lays the foundation for future commercial use of state-of-the-art carbon fiber reinforced TCP piping systems
Evonik is a leader in the supply of thermoplastic materials, leading the development, certification and supply of carbon fiber reinforced PA12 composite tapes for high-end TCP applications
Vitor Lavini, Director of Evonik's Industrial and Oil & Gas Business Unit: "We are very excited to have achieved this important milestone
The carbon fiber used by Evonik comes from the world's leading producer, which is also one of the suppliers of carbon fiber to the aerospace and automotive industries
After the carbon fiber was delivered to the factory in Marr, Germany, it was paired with a custom-developed PA12 polymer to produce a high-quality carbon fiber-reinforced PA12 composite tape on site, which was then delivered to Airborne Oil & Gas's plant in the Netherlands for further production of the well-known TCP flexible pipe
Martin Strande, Head of Pipes, Materials and Testing at DNV GL, added: "The oil and gas industry is increasingly accepting thermoplastic composite pipes as an alternative to traditional solutions, helping to significantly reduce costs throughout the project cycle
In response to the current challenges in the field of subsea pipelines, TCP pipelines are gradually becoming the preferred product as a safe and economical solution
Henk de Boer, Chief Technology Officer, Airborne Oil & Gas, said: “Airborne Oil & Gas is very proud of its achievements in the TCP field and would like to thank Evonik and DNV GL for their full support in helping us achieve this R&D goal
