Further reductions in carbon footprint are just around the corner
Further reductions in carbon footprint are just around the cornerThe development of electric vehicles is progressing and the demand for charging stations is increasing accordingly
.
The European Green Deal sets a target of 1 million public charging points by 2025
.
These charging stations will be needed to power the 13 million electric vehicles on European roads
.
Covestro is driving the transition to electric vehicles with innovative material solutions and has been working with the EVBox Group, a leading full-service provider of electric vehicle charging in the Netherlands, for over a decade
.
By using ISCC PLUS certified mass-balanced polycarbonate (Makrolon® RE), the two companies aim to achieve a more sustainable solution
.
The aim is to set a new standard for charging infrastructure: while electric vehicles no longer need fossil fuels for power, both partners now want to save resources on charging stations and equip them with more sustainable materials
.
The joint development has only just begun, but the ISCC PLUS-certified Makrolon® RE has already overcome an important obstacle: it meets the technical requirements of charging station manufacturers
.
Pay close attention to the life cycle
Pay close attention to the life cycleWijnand Diemer, Senior Director Product Management at EVBox Group, explains: “It is very important for us to consider the entire life cycle of the charging station right from the start of its development and design
.
This includes recycled materials as raw materials, modularity for easy maintenance Design, and remanufacturing of components and entire charging stations
.
We are delighted to have Coves Creation as a competent and trusted partner to do this
.
”
A partner that will soon support EVBox with more sustainable materials
.
Makrolon® RE series plastics are derived from recycled waste and residues
.
Like standard products, they are recyclable and durable
.
Some products are even carbon neutral from cradle to factory gate, thanks to the introduction of raw materials from mass-balanced biological waste and residues and renewable energy in the production process
.
This will significantly reduce its carbon footprint compared to standard types of products
.
Dr.
Niklas Meine, Electrical and Electronic Marketing Department, Engineering Plastics, EMEA, Covestro, adds: "In order to meet technical requirements, special material properties are essential
.
These include impact resistance, color fastness Durability and surface quality, these are properties that polycarbonates have to meet in very different climatic areas, including outdoors
.
The key factor here is durability
.
Our Makrolon® RE range provides outstanding performance on the basis of alternative raw materials technical performance, so that CO2 emissions can be significantly reduced as early as the construction phase of the charging station
