According to research by Rystad Energy, coal-fired power generation in Europe rose 18% last year to 579 TWh from 2020, interrupting a downward trend
since 2012.
The research firm said the rally due to gas supply issues and limited alternatives could reappear
in 2022.
It is expected that if gas prices remain high, or if Russia's conflict with Ukraine reduces gas-fired power generation, coal generation could increase by 11% to 641TWh
by 2022.
"As the regional energy crisis has shown, coal remains a key component of the power mix, especially when the reliability of other energy sources is questioned, and this is unlikely to change in the near future," said
Carlos Torres Diaz, director of gas and electricity market research at Rystad Energy.
In 2021, wind and hydropower fell by 4% and 1%
respectively due to low wind speeds and low dam levels in major countries.
Wind power is likely to increase slightly from 447 TWh in 2021 to 469 TWh in 2022, while solar power is likely to increase from 180 TWh to 191 TWh, for a total increase of 33 TWh
.
Nuclear energy rose 6 percent last year to 884 TWh but is expected to decline
slightly this year due to challenges such as aging French reactors and regular maintenance.
Despite record gas prices, gas generation in Europe declined
only slightly in 2021, the research firm said.
Given the constraints on other energy sources, persistently high natural gas prices could cause consumers to face energy price spikes
for some time to come.
