New energy consulting firm Delta-EE recently said that according to the announced project capacity, the electrolyzer capacity of the European green hydrogen industry will reach 2.
7 GW
by 2025.
However, this is well below the EU's target
of 6 GW by 2024.
According to research by Edinburgh-based Delta-EE's new Global Hydrogen Information Service, there are currently 67 operational projects
in 13 countries.
The projects have a combined capacity of 56 MW and are estimated to produce 4,700 tons of green hydrogen
per year.
Robert Bloom, Product Manager, said, "On the one hand, this is a rapid growth of key technologies for net-zero targets; On the other hand, it is still far from meeting the ambitious national and EU targets
that have been set.
”
Given the substantial funding provided through various national hydrogen strategies, the EU Green Deal and IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest), Bloom expects more projects to join
.
About half of Europe's green hydrogen production is currently in the transport sector, while about a third is spent on decarbonization
of industrial applications such as petrochemical refining.
Germany accounts for nearly 50 percent of Europe's current electrolyzer capacity, but the industry is growing rapidly
, the company said.
Countries such as Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark will see 10 MW projects in 2021/22 and will move towards 100 MW by 2025
.
Delta-EE noted that the key to expansion will be an increase in electrolyzer manufacturing capacity, adding that manufacturers such as Nel Hydrogen, ITM Power, Cummins and McPhy are all building plants
with an annual capacity of 100 MW or more.
