The Oxford Institute for Energy Research said European gas demand is expected to continue to grow over the next five years, already growing for three consecutive years as the economy continues to recover and coal and nuclear power plants come offline

European gas demand is expected to continue to grow over the next five years
A report published by the Oxford Energy Institute estimated that natural gas demand reached 548 billion cubic meters last year, up 5% from 2016 and the third consecutive year of growth
after a decline between 2010 and 2014.
Growth in natural gas as a fuel for power generation was boosted by below-average temperatures in January 2017, continued economic recovery, coal-fired power plant closures, and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
.
All of these drivers are likely to continue to play an important role in the short term, defined as the next five
years, the report said.
