The European Commission said on Thursday that the EU needs to increase its offshore wind capacity by 25-fold by 2050 to meet its climate change targets
.
In its offshore renewable energy plan, the European Commission mentions that the EU27 will need to add 60 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 300 GW by 2050
.
Currently, the EU has an installed capacity of 12 GW
of offshore wind.
Achieving these targets means that almost €800 billion of investment is needed for offshore wind development in the EU, which, although not legally binding, will form the basis of
future EU energy policy.
