If Europe is to meet its 35% renewable energy target by 2030, investments in the grid will need to be scaled up and become more strategic
.
Europe must upgrade its grid to meet renewable energy targets
This is the recommendation of
the Renewable Energy Grid Initiative (RGI) and the European Wind Energy Association (WindEurope).
While smart grids, demand-responsive technologies, flexible wind farms, and battery storage are helping to achieve this, upgrade efforts are needed to ensure significant cost savings
.
Renewable energy producers and grid operators need to work more closely together to plan and develop new transmission lines
, the two organizations said.
RGI and WindEurope said the plan should take into account the expansion of renewable energy, electrification of other sectors, and environmental and social impacts
.
RGI and WindEurope also said the EU must prioritise funding for grid upgrades, as the electrification of heating, transport and industry is essential
for decarbonisation.
The two sides advocate better use of software used in the electricity market, such as the Grid Support Service, which allows intermittent generation facilities to adjust the power supply
to demand.
