Eurelectric, the European electricity industry association, said that by 2030, up to 80% of EU electricity will be fossil-free, regardless of
whether the European economy faces a prolonged economic crisis.
Eurelectric represents European national electricity associations and leading national electricity companies
.
According to Reuters, two-thirds of the EU's electricity in the first half of
this year was carbon-free.
Renewables account for 40 percent of the electricity mix, and fossil fuel generation fell 18 percent year-on-year to 34 percent
, the report said.
Ten years ago, renewables accounted for 20% of the EU's electricity mix, compared to 34%
last year.
Kristian Ruby, Secretary General of Eurelectric, said: "This year, the power sector has proven its vital value
to society by providing clean, reliable electricity to hospitals, government offices and millions of people working from home.
”
He added: "To achieve the 2030 target, and even further, we must urgently remove barriers to stimulate the development of
low-carbon energy sources such as wind and solar.
To meet the EU's 2030 climate targets, wind and solar capacity must be doubled
.
”
Recently, many projects have been delayed due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the permitting process is slowing down
.
In addition, the infrastructure for electric vehicles needs to be promoted, and the growth of coal imports must also be stopped
