The governments of Estonia and Latvia have agreed on a project that envisages the construction of an offshore wind farm
of up to 1 GW in the Gulf of Riga in the Baltic Sea.
The Estonian government said last week that the two sides had signed a memorandum of understanding on the initial development of
the project.
The plan is to assess wind energy resources in the area, review existing offshore projects and environmental factors, and select the most appropriate location
.
Once all studies have been completed and licensed, designated areas will be offered for development
through a competitive tender process.
According to the plan, the offshore wind farm will be commissioned in 2030 and will generate about 3.
5 TWh of electricity per year, which will cover about 40% of Estonia's annual electricity
consumption.
Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas said: "The offshore wind farm jointly developed by Estonia and Latvia is a unique project that contributes to the country's renewable energy targets and creates new opportunities
for the development of other offshore wind farms.
