Enel Green Power (EGP), owned by Italian power giant Enel, has begun construction of its first solar power plant in Zambia with a capacity of 34MW.
Located in the southern Lusaka multi-facility economic zone in the south of the country, the Ngongeye solar PV plant is part of
the World Bank Group's Scaling Solar program run by the Zambia Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).
Enel won the project development rights in June 2016 and the plant is expected to be completed
in the first quarter of 2019.
"The commencement of construction of the Ngongeye solar farm is a new milestone in strengthening Enel Group's presence on the African continent, where we have become the first private renewable energy operator
in terms of installed capacity," said the head of EGP.
With its clean, sustainable and reliable power, Ngonye will play an important role in helping Zambia meet its electrification goals, proving once again that renewable utility-scale power plants are the most efficient solution
for obtaining electricity on the continent.
”
EGP signed a 25-year power purchase agreement
with Zambia's state-owned utility, ZESCO.
Once fully up and running, the facility is expected to generate around 70GWh of electricity
per year.
Due to the need to diversify the energy generation mix dominated by hydropower, the Zambian government has set a target
of installing up to 600 MW of solar power in the next two to three years.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) recently approved $50 million in framework financing for a small-scale renewable energy project in Zambia after a severe power supply shortage
caused by drought due to the country's heavy reliance on hydropower.
