The country's largest wind farm, located in the southern region of Ica, opened for operation
on Wednesday, according to Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines.
The $165 million project is the result of
a public-private partnership between MEEM and Enel Peru.
Enel Peru is the largest private power company under the Italian electricity company
Enel.
Built within Wayra I Park, the wind farm consists of 42 huge turbines that generate up to 132 megawatts of electricity per day, enough to provide green energy
to 482,000 homes in the region.
According to MEMM, the turbines will benefit from the south winds around NAZCA and produce clean and environmentally friendly electricity
.
The Wayra I Park project will produce 605 GWh of electricity per year and will provide electricity
to households with inconsistent energy services.
MEMM said the wind farm will help the state exceed its goal of
sourcing 5 percent of its overall energy needs from renewable sources.
He also informed that the use of turbines will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 285,000 tons per year, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the Peruvian atmosphere
.
MIMINE also announced its efforts to create legislation to make it easier for companies to invest in the renewable energy market so that Peru can have electricity
for 100% of its rural population by 2021.
Peru's deputy minister of electricity said the planned legislation would allow renewable energy companies, such as those in the solar and wind sectors, to compete
with traditional energy sources.
