Emulex and Qlogic jointly promote 8G Fibre Channel products
.
The product is expected to be available in storage networks starting next year and will eventually double the throughput of 4 Gbit/s Fibre Channel currently used in data centers
.
Emulex announced support for the 8G Fibre Channel LightPulse LPe12000 Series host bus adapters and custom mezzanine cards for blade servers and IOC 540 embedded I/O controllers
.
QLogic did not disclose too many details, saying it has begun testing a range of 8G Fibre Channel switches and host bus adapters and providing samples to major OEMs for testing
.
Products include single-port cards, dual-port cards, blade server cards and switches, edge switches, and directors
.
It is reported that the two companies are starting to test and send sample prototypes, which will take 3 to 6 months to be confirmed
by the system OEM before being delivered to the end user in June next year.
The goal of 8G products is to improve the performance of networks using dual-core and quad-core servers, helping users integrate the systems used, reducing the number of systems and increasing
bandwidth.
The 8G product is expected to handle 200,000 IOPS of operation
.
Both Emulex and QLogic are expanding their product lines to address the reality that data centers use more networking technologies, including iSCSI and Infiniband, and have expressed support for the emerging Fibre Channel over Ethernet standard
