According to Mohamed el-Khayat, executive chairman of the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), Egypt's renewable energy has reached 6,000 MW of capacity, of which 2,000 MW comes from solar and wind energy
.
The remaining two-thirds come mainly from hydropower
.
With a year left before the government's deadline, the North African country reached its goal of adding 20 percent renewable energy
to the country's electricity mix.
According to the Global Wind Energy Report 2018, Egypt has installed 380 MW of wind power capacity
in the past year.
Major ongoing renewable energy projects in Egypt include the Benban Solar Complex, scheduled to come on stream
in October 2019.
According to el-Khayat, the growth is attributed to recent policies, such as the Independent Power Producer (IPP) policy, who are currently joining the industry and signing a power purchase agreement
with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
As of September 2019, the government is working out a policy on direct consumption regulations
for the production and sale of electricity.
An important point of the new rules is that no company is allowed to monopolize the production or sale of electricity and negotiate electricity prices directly with consumers
.
The new law will open the market to the private sector and encourage healthy competition
