Recently, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) have agreed to provide $88 million in financing to upgrade the Qairokkum hydropower plant and improve electricity supply in Tajikistan
.
Created in 2010 by 194 countries that are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the GCF supports developing countries in their efforts
to address the challenge of climate change.
The new funds will be used to complete the second and final phase
of the six-decade QHPP rehabilitation and modernization.
The QHPP upgrade will install hydrosteel components, turbines and electromechanical equipment
for four hydropower units.

With funding from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Austria and the United Kingdom, the QHPP Upgrade Project was launched
in 2014, in addition to the Climate Investment Fund Climate Resilience Pilot Project.
The plant is expected to increase from 126MW to 174MW when completed, and new climate restoration measures will also be introduced to enable it to address the expected impacts
of climate change on the country's hydrological situation.
The new measures will also enable Tajik hydropower operators to predict, assess and manage climate-related risks
