Sinochem News, according to World Natural Gas News on June 23: Dutch fertilizer producer OCI has joined a global-scale blue ammonia production project in Ruwais, UAE, through a joint venture with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) Fertiglobe
.
Fertiglobe has signed a participation agreement with the project developer TA'ZIZ, which is a joint venture between ADNOC and Abu Dhabi Development Holdings (ADQ)
.
The facilities in the plan will produce up to 100 million tons/year of blue ammonia from nitrogen and blue hydrogen extracted from natural gas
.
The carbon dioxide emitted during the hydrogen production process will be captured and stored
OCI said that the partner will conduct engineering design studies before making a final investment decision in 2022
.
The plant will go online in 2025
Nassef Sawiris, CEO of OCI, stated that the cooperation “is very much in line with our global and regional platform decarbonization strategy
.
It helps to develop our low-carbon and clean fuel products, including the fast-growing biofuel business
Sawiris said that as the world shifts to clean energy, ammonia offers "huge potential" and will become a driver of the hydrogen economy
.
"Ammonia is a multi-purpose clean hydrogen carrier.
In addition to various fertilizers and downstream industrial uses, there are many exciting fuel applications
.
The use of ammonia as a transportation fuel is particularly promising because it is transported over long distances with methanol.
