On September 28, Johnson Mathey (London Stock Exchange: JMAT) and Dow Corporation (NYSE: DOW) announced that Anqing Refining & Asahinol Butyl Octanol Chemical Co.
, Ltd.
("Anqing Refining & Petrochemical Dawn") has obtained licenses for its low-pressure carbonyl synthesis (LP OxoSM) technology to produce approximately 200,000 tons of octanol and 25,000 tons of isobutyraldehyde
.
This is the second set of low-voltage carbonyl synthesis technology licenses provided to Anqing Refining & Chemical Shuguang Company, and the 23rd set of technology licenses
authorized in China.
This license will support Anqing Refining & Chemical Sugon to expand its carbonyl synthesis business in the growing carbonyl synthesis alcohol market
.
Anqing Refining & Chemical's new plant is expected to start operations in 2024, and its first plant authorized to use low-pressure carbonyl synthesis technology will be operational in 2016 with a capacity of 100,000 tons of octanol, 115,000 tons of n-butanol and 23,000 tons
of isobutanol.
Hector Miravete, Global Commercial Director of Catalyst Technology at Johnson Matthey said: "This is a significant recognition of
our technology.
The new design includes some of the improvements we've made to ensure that low-pressure carbonyl synthesis technology remains world-leading
.
We have already started process design and look forward to working closely
with Anqing Refining & Chemical Shuguang during the construction of the new plant.
" ”
Lauren James, Global Business Director of Industrial Solutions at Dow, said: "The second set of low-pressure carbonyl synthesis technology licenses granted to Anqing Refining & Chemical Sugon is another demonstration of the value of
this mature technology and its many intellectual property rights.
In addition, the project will complement Anqing Refining & Chemical's existing technology with rich operational experience through new innovations, creating opportunities
for the rapid development of China's carbonyl synthetic alcohol market.
As an official licensed user, Anqing Refining & Chemical Sugon will have access to the latest innovations to create synergies with the first plant, while also leveraging Johnson Matthey and Dow's expertise to support the development of
the new plant.

About low-pressure carbonyl synthesis (LP OxoSM) technology
Low-pressure carbonyl synthesis is a low-pressure hydroformylation process that most commonly uses propylene and syngas (a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide) to produce n-butyral and isobutyraldehyde
.
These butyraldehydes are then converted to octanol (2-EH), n-butanol and isobutanol, respectively, mainly for plasticizer applications, paint production, and specialty coatings and solvents
.
Other applications of low-pressure carbonyl synthesis technology include processes for the production of isononanol and dipropylheptol, both of which are high-end plasticizer alcohols that replace 2-EH from mixed butene materials, and processes for the production of carbon-12 to carbon-15 surfactant series alcohols from carbon-11 to carbon-14 Fischer-Tropsch synthetic olefins
.
The technique can also convert heptene 1 extracted from Fischer-Tropsch products into comonomer grade octene 1
.
2021 marks the 50th anniversary
of Johnson Matthey and Dow in the development and licensing of low-voltage carbonyl synthesis technologies.
For more than 50 years, Johnson Matthey and Dow have licensed their low-pressure carbonyl synthesis technology to 57 projects
in 15 countries.
