According to foreign media news, Djibouti Telecom is planning to upgrade the DARE1 submarine cable system, and the system service provider Ciena will be responsible for the system upgrade
.
It is understood that the DARE1 submarine cable system, full name Djibouti Africa Regional Express 1 submarine network system, connects Djibouti, Somalia and Kenya, with a total length of 4,854 kilometers and a design capacity of 36Tbps
.
The $80 million submarine cable system is jointly owned
by Djibouti Telecom, Somali Telecom, and local operators Hormuud Telecom and Kenya Telecom.
The upgrade will leverage Ciena's GeoMesh Extreme solution, allowing line rates to be doubled to 400Gbps
.
Ian Clarke, Vice President of Global Submarine Cable Solutions at Ciena, commented: "With Ciena's GeoMesh Extreme, Djibouti Telecom has expanded the capacity of DARE1 to deliver dynamic new 10G, 100G and spectrum sharing services
for an increasingly digital world.
”
DARE 1 was first proposed in 2018, the path planning lasted for 1 year, by March 2019, the developer began to apply for land and environmental permit certificates, and after completion in October 2019, cable laying specialist SubCom began cable laying, which was put into commercial operation
in April 2021.
The DARE 1 submarine cable can strategically elevate Mombasa's position
as an information hub and key gateway to East Africa.
On the other hand, the continued growth of consumer demand for connectivity and data will open up new markets
for content development networks and the country's top service providers.
According to the World Bank, every 10% of the population accounted for broadband affects GDP in developing countries by 1.
