Danish offshore wind farm developer Ørsted has published its outlook
for Denmark's first offshore wind cluster.
The company's vision is to use Bornholm as a hub and connect Denmark with two or three neighboring countries, such as Poland, Sweden and possibly Germany, and connect up to 5 GW of offshore wind power to the island
in the long term.
The initiative will also make it possible to realize Bornholm's vision of carbon neutrality, while also turning the island into a pilot
for innovative solutions for the green transition, the company said.
Martin Neubert, Executive Vice President and CEO Offshore at Ørsted, said: "If the huge potential of offshore wind in greening Europe is to be realised, the energy of offshore wind clusters must be delivered to several countries
.
Martin said, "Before building large artificial islands in the North Sea, we propose to combine
the existing transmission deployment plan and designated offshore wind area with the existing island of Bornholm.
”
The first step in the idea was to build a 1 GW offshore wind farm in RønnneBanke, southwest of Bornholm, for tender and connect Denmark and Poland
via an interconnected system.
The offshore wind developer says its vision "paves the way for the next phase of Denmark's green transition, where the production of renewable hydrogen can make aviation, shipping and heavy road transport carbon neutral, a decisive and necessary contribution
to the Danish government's ambitious goals.
" Reduce Denmark's carbon emissions by 70%
by 2030.
”
Danish transmission system operator Energinet has proposed a submarine interconnection system between New Zealand and Poland in the
EU's ten-year network development plan.
The southwest region of Bornholm is reserved for government offshore wind tenders, and the Danish Energy Agency estimated the potential of these areas in excess of 3 GW
in an April 2019 study.
