United Soft Plastics (USP), a custom compounding company for TPE materials and TPE films based in Lawrenceville, GA, has partnered with a Danish startup called Impervious to develop a custom extruded medical-grade TPE film that it claims provides high Level of patient support and therapy friendly wound healing, alleviating patient overstimulation and pain
.
Patients receiving wound dressings for arm and leg injuries must receive regular medical care to ensure that the wound dressing area is clean and dry, while preventing the entry of dangerous bacteria, prior to any follow-up treatment or routine aftercare
.
Previously, this was accomplished by covering the wound dressing with a medical protective film or protective bag (plastic bag), which was then taped to the skin and sealed
.
However, removing the protective film by peeling the tape off the skin often causes unpleasant pain and unnecessary micro-damage to the most superficial skin layers
.
The new thermoplastic elastomer film is a latex-free alternative that doesn't need to be peeled off because it is permanently welded to the plastic bag as a stretchable, flexible tapered seal
.
Therefore, the use of tape can be avoided entirely
.
According to Michael Bodmann, general manager of United Soft Plastics Europe, TPE film products play a significant role in the daily treatment of patients and medical staff
.
"When one of our European customers approached us about this idea, we were initially unsure whether we could develop a medical TPE grade that combines many partially opposing performance characteristics as well as meeting stringent customer requirements," said Bodmann.
needs and medical regulatory requirements
.
”
This TPE grade has a low Shore A hardness (25-35), high tear strength in relation to required transverse and longitudinal strain loads, and very thin wall thickness (0.
2-0.
4 mm) requirements
.
The company has also solved manufacturing issues so the medical-grade thermoplastic elastomer can be produced in a cost-effective manner, Bodmann said
.
The one-year joint development program is in the pre-commercialization stage and clinical trials are underway
.
After initial commercialization in Europe, the new TPE films will be available globally
.
