On Monday, Poland's largest coal group, state-owned PGG, temporarily closed operations at two mines to curb the spread
    of the novel coronavirus.

Poland, which derives most of its electricity from coal, has so far confirmed 11,761 cases of coronavirus, including 539 deaths
    .

PGG, which employs about 40,000 people and produces nearly 30 million tonnes of coal annually at eight mines in southern Poland, said it had confirmed 38 cases of coronavirus at its Murcki-Staszic mine in Katowice and 32 cases at its Jankowice mine in Rebnik
    .

With most workers at both mines now in quarantine at home, PGG decided to close both mines until May 3
    .

JSW, the EU's largest coking coal producing state, also said on Monday that it had detected a case of coronavirus
    among its workers.

Poland's coal mining industry supports 83,000 jobs, and employees face financial difficulties due to falling demand for coal, and unions want jobs and income security
    after the crisis.
