● Another important application for carbon dioxide-based cardyon® materials
● Continuously promote the development of circular economy by replacing oil
Covestro is continuously contributing to the circular economy with its advanced CO2 technology
.
For example, Covestro has teamed up with Australia-based Advanced Polymer Technology (APT), the world's leading manufacturer of polyurethane-based materials, acrylic coatings and artificial turf, and Polytan to create a dedicated hockey floor called Poligras Tokyo GT
.
Poligras Tokyo GT was created for this summer's sports event in Tokyo, and the adhesive under the floor was made using Covestro's CO2 technology
.
The new sustainable material, called cardyon®, or polyol, contains up to 20 percent carbon dioxide
.
Covestro brought this pioneering technology to the market several years ago
.
This innovative technology can reduce the use of petroleum-based raw materials required in polyols by one-fifth, helping industries such as plastics manufacturing advance resource conservation and practice a circular economy
.
Covestro produces cardyon® at its Dormagen site near Cologne
.
More sustainable and playable
More sustainable and playable"Thanks to Covestro's CO2 technology, as well as other sustainable materials such as renewable raw materials and reclaimed rubber, this hockey rink is one of the most sustainable and technologically advanced floors we have developed globally
.
" APT "At the same time, it ensures cooler floor temperatures and faster ball speeds, resulting in superior playability and field performance for hockey players," said Jim Tritt, COO of parent company Sport Group Asia
.
“By increasingly replacing crude oil with carbon dioxide and other alternative raw materials, our industry is making an important contribution to the conservation of fossil resources
,” said Dr.
Persefoni Hilken, Cardyon® project manager at Covestro.
“We are delighted to be working with APT Together, such partners will further advance sustainable development and the circular economy by applying our innovative CO2 technology to more areas
.
"
Realize the full cycle of carbon dioxide
Realize the full cycle of carbon dioxideThis technology reuses carbon dioxide as a valuable raw material for the production of sustainable plastics
.
Using chemical catalysts, carbon dioxide is reacted with traditional raw materials to make polyols in a more economically viable and sustainable way, while simultaneously immobilizing and utilizing carbon dioxide in the process
.
Today, cardyon® is used in insoles, automotive interiors, mattress foam and adhesives for sports floors
.
Covestro has also successfully trial-produced rigid foam-based thermal insulation materials and surfactants for detergents using this CO2 technology
.
Last year, Covestro teamed up with Shandong Yinuowei Polyurethane Co.
, Ltd.
to lay a healthy trail using cardyon® polyether polyol material in the Covestro Asia Pacific Innovation Center in Shanghai.
This is the first time this innovative carbon dioxide material has been used in The Asia-Pacific region is applied to plastic runways
